Shetland Heat Energy & Power
Local heat. Cleaner Future. Cost-effective alternative to Oil & Electric.
Local heat. Cleaner Future. Cost-effective alternative to Oil & Electric.
Each year we supply around 40 GWh of cleaner heat — about a quarter of all the heat and hot water used in Shetland’s homes. By doing this, our customers collectively save around £6.5 million per year compared to the equivalent cost of electric heating on typical tariffs, while cutting over 3,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year — the equivalent of removing around 2,500 cars from the road (based on comparative emissions against traditional oil heating and average car CO₂ outputs).
We capture heat from Shetland’s Energy Recovery Plant, which incinerates non-recyclable waste that would otherwise go to landfill. We also recover the surplus, wasted heat from Lerwick Power Station. Together, these sources provide clean, reliable energy that is distributed through over 40 km of insulated underground pipes to more than 1,100 homes and around 150 businesses and public buildings — including Lerwick’s hospital, schools, and leisure centre.
By choosing SHEAP, customers are supporting a cleaner environment, lower energy costs, and reinvestment back into the Shetland community.
